Growing and Maintenance Tips:


Attention should be paid to the location of planting, as the powder released by the leaves can cause irritation to some people's noses. Tolerant of urban environments and a variety of soil conditions, including high pH, this tree is a suitable specimen for larger landscape, park or street tree. Its most notable attribute is its exfoliating bark, giving the trunk a mottled look.

One helpful identifier to differentiate between Platanus occidentalis vs non-native Platanus is that only P. occidentalis holds its seed clusters singly. All the others hold theirs in twos or threes.
